It is a prominent body feature at the back of the lower leg which attaches the two large calf muscles, the gastrocnemius and soleus, to the heel bone. Both of these muscles are needed to push off with the foot and rise up on the toes so we can walk. Achilles tendonitis is usually seen in young athletic types who engage in such sports as basketball and running. It can also occur later in life among those who are just starting to exercise because the muscles and tendon have lost their flexibility and cannot tolerate the new stress placed on them.
