Acupuncture and acupressure are methods used to create a smooth flow of vital energy, or chi, throughout the body. The aim of both methods is to heal the body by balancing its energy flow. Considered alternative-complementary treatments in the United States, they have been standard treatment in China for many millennia. Needles are used for acupuncture, and fingertips for acupressure. In the United States, those who practice acupuncture are either licensed practitioners or physicians. Acupressure is used by some chiropractors and massage therapists, and can even be used for self-treatment. It has been referred to as acupuncture without needles.
